Mole Trapping Georgia by Total Animal Control

Sonic Spikes, Chewing Gum, and Other Remedies That Do Nothing

Some mole remedies are merely ineffective. These ones have no credible mechanism at all, and a few of them will damage your lawn on the way to not working.

Vibrating and ultrasonic stakes

Solar stakes that click or buzz into the soil are sold on the idea that the vibration drives moles away. Controlled testing has not supported it. Moles live alongside far stronger ground vibration than these devices produce — mowers, traffic, foot fall — without abandoning productive feeding ground.

Where people do report success, it is almost always seasonal. Activity was going to drop off as the soil dried or cooled anyway, and the stake happened to be in the ground when it did.

Chewing gum and mothballs

The chewing gum story — that a mole eats it and cannot digest it — has circulated for decades with nothing behind it. Moles are hunting live prey by movement and touch; they are not foraging for foil-wrapped sticks.

Mothballs are worse than useless. Naphthalene in soil does not hold anywhere near a concentration that would affect an animal in an open tunnel system, and you have introduced a pesticide into ground your family uses. In several contexts using them this way is also outside their labelled use.

Flooding and exhaust

Running a hose into a tunnel rarely reaches the animal. Mole systems are extensive and often deeper than people expect, and north Georgia clay either drains the water off laterally or holds it in one section while the mole simply leaves for another.

Piping engine exhaust into runs is both ineffective for the same reason and genuinely dangerous. It is not worth discussing further than that.

Why these stay popular

Mole activity is naturally uneven. Surface ridging comes and goes with soil temperature and moisture, sometimes over just a few days. Any remedy applied right before a natural lull looks like it worked.

That coincidence is the entire engine behind mole folk remedies, and it is why the same ideas keep circulating decade after decade with no one ever quite disproving them to their own satisfaction.
