Poison Worms and Mole Baits: Why Results Are So Inconsistent

Bait looks like the obvious answer. Its results are the most inconsistent of any mole product sold, and the reason is simple once you know how a mole feeds.

Why bait seems so logical

Moles eat worms. These are worm-shaped and carry a lethal dose. Place one in a run and the problem solves itself. On paper it is the tidiest mole product on the market, and when it works it genuinely does work.

The difficulty is how often it does not, and why.

A mole hunts live prey

An eastern mole finds food by detecting movement and touch as it pushes through soil. It is responding to a live, moving earthworm. A bait sitting motionless in a tunnel does not present the cues the animal is built to respond to, and moles routinely push past them, wall them off with soil, or ignore them entirely.

Placement also has to be exact. Bait dropped into an abandoned surface ridge — and most visible ridges are exploratory runs the animal may never use again — is simply bait left in an empty tunnel.

The risk side

Most of these products use bromethalin or a similar toxicant. They are placed underground, which reduces exposure, but dogs dig, tunnels collapse, and baits get brought to the surface more often than the packaging suggests.

If you have dogs that work a yard, or young children, that risk deserves a real weighing rather than a glance at the label. A trap set correctly in a run is contained and carries no toxicant at all.

The pattern we see

Plenty of the yards we trap have a box of bait in the garage that was tried first. Sometimes it caught one animal and the tunnelling resumed weeks later from a run system the homeowner never located. Usually it did nothing that could be distinguished from the mole simply moving to another part of the lawn.

Bait can work. It cannot be relied on, and there is no way to know which yard you have until after you have spent the season finding out.
